Buildings insurance for leasehold properties

Rights to see information about buildings insurance

You have a legal right to ask your landlord for a written summary of your building’s insurance policy, and to see a copy of the policy.

If you ask for a summary, it should tell you:

  • the amount for which the property is insured
  • the name of the insurer
  • the risks covered in the policy

If you ask to see the policy, you can also see any other relevant documents that give evidence of insurance premiums your landlord has paid, such as receipts. They must allow you to take copies.

You should ask for the summary or ask to see the policy in writing. The landlord must provide the information within 21 days of getting your request. They cannot charge you for doing this, although they may be able to recover any costs through the service charge as a management cost.
