Message from LEASE Chair Roger Southam – January 2018

As 2018 springs into life we are now looking to see how the ground breaking announcements at the end of 2017 are brought to fruition.  Already one month into 2018 and we have seen some unexpected surprises.  Who would have thought we would have a change of Housing Minister in such short order although with the Secretary of State continuing in post there should be a continuum in Governmental leasehold policy.

No one could argue that having fairness for all was a bad thing and the interesting challenge is delivering the aims and desires laid out on 21st December.  I am aware that some developers have not heard of the announcements or the implications!  We will see a Law Commission review opine on matters and hopefully that will give a shape to the challenges.  One thing for sure the excellent team at LEASE will play their part in working with Government and advising leaseholders.

The tragedy of Grenfell still casts a long shadow and the team are now tasked with a fire safety programme to advice, assist and mediate for leaseholders around the Country concerned or impacted.  This will be rolled out and awareness made of the service to those who need it.

We are planning the best way to reach out to leaseholders and the public to raise awareness of leasehold issues and matters.  To this end we are looking to participate in public exhibitions and conferences that will let us gain the widest reach around the Country possible.  We are in the process of discussing and devising the programme and delivery.  More on this will come out very shortly and the team are excited that we have hit upon a means to maximise the benefits in the widest way.

If the first month can bring a change of Minister, we look forward to seeing what unfolds across 2018.

LEASE is governed by a board, appointed as individuals by the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.
